Where do Democrats go now? Which was the last bulwark against total Republican domination of the levers of power. Now that he’s out of the race, there’s at least a chance to win — but only a chance, and with a real possibility of division and defeat. Had President Biden remained the nominee, Democrats would have lost not only the presidency but the Senate, and with it the chance to regain the House.
This is the deeply human story of a man who saved us from Donald Trump once and, I believe, was sincerely convinced until the end that he was the best chance to do so again. Aging is hard in fact, it’s hard to admit your own vulnerabilities and limitations at any age — and Biden’s story, which has been filled with tragedy throughout his career ends on a note that is both sad and, I hope, heroic. Ruth Marcus: This moment comes with mixed emotions: sadness mixed with relief and, even more so, fear about the road ahead. I would like to linger a moment on the sadness, though. As much as I was disappointed and ultimately angry by Biden’s unwillingness to step out in this way,
Where do Democrats go now? Democrats have a chance to generate real energy about ideas and people. As scary as that is, the better it will be for the party and the country. Congratulations to Biden for opening the curtain while he’s closing his own curtain. David Ignatius: He looked in the mirror and finally saw what others have seen. I agree with Ruth’s sentiment that we are walking into a space that is unmarked and full of danger, but it is also exciting, Biden has opened the door for generational change. For the first time in a long time.
I did not join the clamor demanding his exit. I believed he would do the right thing. Now, maybe it’s because of the clamor. Either way, he did the right thing. Where there was disappointment yesterday, there is hope today. Dana Milbank: More heroic than anything. Biden did what he has always done and put country first. I hate how publicly this all played out.
Ruth: Regarding the path forward from here, I think it is fair and reasonable for Biden to support Harris. But I think they are trying to anoint her and avoid the divisiveness of a fight for the nomination. I believe that would be a mistake. Delegates must face a choice. The problem with this process from the start has been the absence of alternatives, as David has presciently noted. There should be a process for delegates and Democrats to hear alternatives, rather than being told they have no choice in the matter but to approve Harris. She will likely be the nominee, and there are reasons to believe she would be a good standard-bearer, but process matters a lot here.
